Digital Storytelling

MELLT-Scenario: Digital Storytelling: Fostering Literacies in the EFL-Classroom

Digital storytelling has been called a “new twist to storytelling” (Frazel, 9). It is a modern way of presenting stories with the help of multimedia. Digital storytelling “uses personal digital technology to combine a number of media into a coherent narrative” (Ohler, 15). The final digital story can make use of written and spoken text, pictures (in a slideshow), short film clips and is often accompanied by specific sounds or background music. As the research literature and our own ongoing research projects have shown digital storytelling is not only fun and highly motivating for the students but can also be integrated in the language classroom to serve multiple teaching purposes and to foster several competences such as writing, speaking, interaction and multi(ple) or multimodal literacies (i.e. media literacy, visual literacy).
